“How long until Donald Trump insults the Pope?” tweeted Buzzfeed’s Dominic Holden during the Pontiff’s US tour back in September. Well, the answer to that question is about five months, apparently.
A steaming-mad Trump unleashed on the religious leader after Pope Francis singled out the Republican Presidential candidate for his plan to build a massive wall along the US/Mexico border.
“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not of building bridges, is not Christian. This is not the gospel,” Pope Francis told a reporter during this return flight back to the Vatican after his six-day tour of Mexico, where he blessed immigrants at the Rio Grande.
He continued: “As far as…whether I would advise to vote or not to vote, I am not going to get involved in that. I say only that this man is not Christian if he has said things like that.”
A red-in-the-face Trump — who reportedly confused a communion plate for an offering plate at an Iowa church just a few weeks ago — immediately fired back via a statement that even managed to conjure up an imaginary ISIS attack on the Vatican:
“For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful. I am proud to be a Christian and as President I will not allow Christianity to be consistently attacked and weakened, unlike what is happening now, with our current President. No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man’s religion or faith.”
Don’t worry, Mexico. Trump didn’t forget to insult you in the process, either: “They are using the Pope as a pawn and they should be ashamed of themselves for doing so, especially when so many lives are involved and when illegal immigration is so rampant.”
Twitter reacted as Twitter does during events like these:
Man I’m not a Catholic but maybe it’s time to reconsider your approach when the Pope is calling you out
