Today at 11 a.m. EST, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will hold a national moment of silence to honor Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of Saturday’s morning’s shooting in Tucson, Arizona.
Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who had recently been sworn in to serve another term in Congress, had returned to her district for the weekend, when, at an event to meet the Congresswoman at a local supermarket, a gunman open fired and shot 19 people, killing at least five of them. Among them was Congressman Giffords, who is currently in the intensive care unit at a hospital in Arizona.
In a statement released on Sunday, the President Obama said:
I call on Americans to observe a moment of silence to honor the innocent victims of the senseless tragedy in Tucson, Arizona, including those still fighting for their lives…It will be a time for us to come together as a nation in prayer or reflection, keeping the victims and their families closely at heart.
