Clock is Ticking for Congress to Pass the Dream Act

Did you read Gaby Pacheco’s story today in our DREAM Now Letters series to President Barack Obama? If you did, you’d probably agree that it’s time for Congress to pass the DREAM Act.

As we reported earlier, you all sent tens of thousands of messages to Congress and DHS this month. You asked them to stop the deportation of two upstanding young people like Gaby — Marlen Moreno and Ivan Nikolov — who would qualify to stay in the U.S. under the DREAM Act. With your help, Ivan and Marlen were given a stay of deportation. While this was wonderful news, it’s still only a temporary fix. Marlen, Ivan, Gaby, and thousands of young people like them will not be truly safe until Congress passes the DREAM Act — and the clock is ticking to get it done!

If the DREAM Act doesn’t pass before the November elections take over, another generation of young people could be blocked from giving back to the only country they call home.

Each year about 65,000 students graduate from high school with zero prospects for the future. They live in constant fear of being deported. The DREAM Act would change that. Seventy percent of Americans agree that it makes no moral or economic sense to spend taxpayer dollars arresting, jailing, and deporting youth who grew up in this country. The DREAM Act allows these young people to earn their citizenship through college or military service.

Tell Congress that these young people who were brought to the U.S. as children deserve a chance to give back to the U.S. – their home – through their hard work, service, and dedication!

Tell Congress: it’s time to pass the DREAM Act.
