Yesterday, Congressman Lou Barletta (PA-11) released a statement expressing his strong opposition to Rep. Lamar Smith’s E-Verify legislation, which would require all employers in the U.S. to use this flawed government mandate that would evaluate whether an employee is “legal” and able to work.
If you thought for a second that Rep. Barletta had an epiphany and came to his senses, you were wrong. Barletta is just one of a number of Republicans who think that the Smith bill isn’t hard enough on immigrants and employers. Senator Grassley (R-IA) introduced a bill that goes even further than the Smith proposal, and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach published an op-ed in the New York Post where he, incredibly, equated the Smith bill with “amnesty.”
