Last Sunday, Atlanta DACAmented artist Yehimi Cambron hosted a phonebank for the Dream Act at her mural outside of Atlanta’s Havana Sandwich shop.
Yehimi and other advocates asked attendees to call members of Congress to urge them to pass Dreamer legislation before the end of the year. Attendees also took the opportunity to be photographed in front of Yehimi’s mural as part of the #DreamActNow social media campaign.
Yehimi’s mural is of a monarch butterfly bisected by a pencil, with the butterfly’s right wing transforming into the pages of a book. She drew from her experiences as a DACAmented educator for Teach for America, as well as her own story of migration from Michoacan, which is home to the monarch butterfly that flies north to Canada every year.
As she said in a statement:
I initially created this piece as a representation of my experience as an undocumented teacher and the impact education has had on my life. This symbol has evolved to symbolize the knowledge and wisdom people bring with them when they migrate. Tt’s a symbol of solidarity and resilience for myself and the community.
The event was hosted by Yehimi Cambron, America’s Voice, FWD.us, Latin American Association, Cross Keys Foundation, JCM Ventures, GA Undocumented Youth Alliance, GA Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials, Hispanic Young Professionals and Entrepreneurs, and Los Vecinos de Buford Hwy.
Similar phonebanks have been held in Tallahassee, Florida, and others around the country are scheduled.
