Last night in Tallahassee, Florida, local friends and advocates came together to host a phonebank where they called Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and other members of Congress and asked them to support the Dream Act.
“I’m calling to ask Senator Rubio to protect Dreamers by putting Dreamer legislation up for a vote in the Senate,” says one phonebanker, Luciana, during a call. “Dreamers cannot wait until next year which is why Congress needs to pass legislation right now.”
The event also featured posters calling for legislation as well as a Dream Act tres leches cake. Similar phone banks have been held in Atlanta, Georgia, and others around the country are scheduled.
There are some 32,795 DACA recipients living in Florida, and the Center for American Progress has estimated that their deportations could cost the state $1.5 billion annually.
