In a new piece for the Washington Post, Nick Miroff and Josh Dawsey report on the Trump administration’s latest plan to divert more than $18 billion in military funding to pay for 500 miles in border wall by the 2020 elections. The report comes only weeks after the administration stripped $3.6 billion from 127 approved and appropriated military construction projects.
Meanwhile, Senate Republicans cower in silence, refusing to stand up for long-overdue projects in their home states that support military families and support local economies, all so the narcissistic President can incite his supporters with a rallying cry in his reelection campaign. Evidently, racism and politics are more important to Trump and the GOP than democracy, the Constitution and support for military families.
A Hill-Harris poll just found that 57% of registered voters oppose the plan to divert money from the Department of Defense to build the southern border wall.
According to Douglas Rivlin, Director of Communication for America’s Voice: “No, Mexico is not paying for the wall, but military projects, military families, and American taxpayers are.
“Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell – whose home state of Kentucky is set to lose a new school for children of military members at Fort Campbell – continues to kiss the ring of his Dear Leader rather than fight for his home state. Republicans will soon have another litmus test and an opportunity to stand up for the American people, as Congress prepares for a vote on whether to end the fake National Emergency Declaration, which Trump has used to defund our military for his autographed vanity wall.
“We know how this is likely to end. Conservatives may stand up to their leader in the United Kingdom, but not in Trump’s America.”
