Trump’s $1 Billion Ballroom is Pocket Change Compared to the $70 Billion to Make Us Poorer, Weaker and Less Safe

Washington, DC — This week, congressional Republicans are careening forward with their budget reconciliation bill, seeking to deliver more than $70 billion for mass deportation, on top of the more than $170 billion windfall for immigration enforcement just last year.

The following is a statement from Vanessa Cárdenas, Executive Director of America’s Voice:

“American taxpayers already despise paying $1 billion to fund Trump’s ballroom vanity project, but that’s nothing compared to the $70 billion we’re being asked to pay for a mass deportation crusade that makes us poorer, weaker and less safe.

Despite the reminders about the economic and public safety harms of mass deportation on all Americans, ICE and CBP are set to receive a windfall of new funding without a shred of accountability or restraint. While the ballroom is rightfully scorned, it shouldn’t overshadow the scale or the absurdity of gifting tens of billions more for additional masked agents kidnapping our neighbors and racially profiling our fellow Americans.

It’s crunch time for Congress, including the Dignity Act Republicans, who will have to decide if their legacy will be delivering even more cruelty, chaos and economic harm or listening to the majority of Americans who are calling for accountability and reform.”
