Vanessa Cárdenas: “Democrats must not go along or reward a deeply unserious process being pushed by a deeply unserious party.”
Washington, DC – As America’s Voice has been highlighting, Republicans’ dysfunction, incompetence, and preference for politics above governing has been laid bare this week on immigration and the border. Fresh off House Republicans’ vote counting failure in the sham impeachment of DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Senate Republicans’ torpedoing the very legislative approach they had demanded as a prerequisite for funding the nation’s highest foreign policy priorities, Senate Republicans are now trying to tee up a series of immigration amendments that – again – underscore their deeply unserious approach to governance.
As Politico’s Playbook assessed today, “The Senate GOP’s contortions are almost comical: Having first rejected the immigration-and-foreign-aid bill for its immigration portion, some senators are now demanding immigration amendment votes for the foreign aid-only bill — even though some hardline provisions won’t likely pass.”
According to Vanessa Cárdenas, Executive Director of America’s Voice:
“The torturous circular logic and cynicism of Republicans continues to astound. Fresh off voting against a border and immigration package tilted heavily in their direction some of these same Republicans are now teeing up amendments with brand new legislative text and expecting observers to take them seriously.
It would almost be funny if it wasn’t so deadly serious and consequential given the stakes of addressing 21st-century migration and support for our allies in Ukraine.
Democrats must not go along or reward a deeply unserious process being pushed by a deeply unserious party. They have the opportunity to stop the absurdity and nonsense and take back common-sense governing.”
