Donald Trump is now the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, the leader of the GOP nationally and here in Ohio. Previously, Senator Rob Portman said that he would support the Republican nominee, whether it’s Trump or someone else. Unless Portman now grows a backbone and follows the lead of fellow Republican Senator Ben Sasse, declaring unequivocally that he will not vote for Donald Trump, then Portman remains #WithTrump .
Ohioans already know Portman supports the Trump agenda on immigration. He voted multipletimes to deport DREAMers by ending the DACA program. He opposes DAPA, the policy that offers a modest but critical step forward for the parents of U.S. citizens. Portman also voted against the Senate immigration reform bill that passed by a bipartisan 68-32 margin, after playing a round of typical Washington games.
“Electing Trump to the presidency would be a disaster for the United States and Ohio – not only on immigration, but a range of issues. Trump has unleashed a new level of hate in America that threatens the very fabric of our society,” said Lynn Tramonte, Director of Ohio’s Voice. “Senator Portman is with Trump until he says he isn’t. That’s not the kind of ‘leader’ we need in Ohio.”
