Las Vegas, NV — The following is a statement from Viridiana Vidal, Director of Nevada’s Voice:
“For over a year, Republicans such as Joe Heck supported and embraced Donald Trump and his extreme and offensive views.
When Trump began his campaign by calling Mexicans rapists, Republicans like Joe Heck didn’t call on him to drop out. When Trump called for banning Muslimsfrom entering the United States, Joe Heck continued to embrace him. When Trump pledged to mass deport immigrants and end the DACA program for Dreamers, Joe Heck continued to embrace him. When Trump said a Mexican-American judge born in Indiana was too biased to do his job because of his parents’ country of origin, Joe Heck continued to embrace him. When Trump attacked the gold star Khan family, Joe Heck continued to embrace him. When Trump attacked Alicia Machado as a fat and disgusting, Joe Heck continued to embrace him. When Trump refused to disavow his role as the nation’s leading birther, Joe Heck still supported him. Despite Donald Trump’s long record of disrespecting women, Joe Heck stood by him.
It’s only now, one month before Election Day when it’s clear that Donald Trump will lose this election, that Heck is calling on him to drop out. This is a display of pure political expediency, not character. It’s too little and way too late. Joe Heck failed for a year to stand up for Nevadans and American values. He gets no credit for jumping off the sinking ship of Donald Trump’s campaign.
Instead of praise for his disavowal of Trump under political pressure, Joe Heck deserves condemnation for endorsing a man in the first place who is – and has always been – so obviously unfit for the presidency.”
