Washington, DC – Yesterday, House Republicans announced the Committee on Oversight and Accountability will hold a hearing the week of February 6 to investigate the Biden administration’s border policies. While the accompanying letter from committee chair Rep. James Comey (R-KY) to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas was filled with misleading assertions and out-of-context statistics, it was careful to avoid using the “invasion” and “replacement” rhetoric that underlies much of the GOP’s obsessive border focus and is ripped from the fringes of the white nationalist movement.

However, the release of the committee membership yesterday (committee roster here) and those members’ reactions and ongoing embrace of dangerous white nationalist conspiracies underscores the real driving forces behind the hearing and what to expect. As Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), a member of the committee, tweeted yesterday, “Mark your calendars. The week of Feb 6th. A @GOPoversight hearing on the invasion at our southern border. Time to get to the bottom of this mess. Buckle up!”

America’s Voice has documented the embrace of dangerous conspiracy theories about an immigrant “invasion” and the “replacement” of white Americans and their ties to specific acts of terrorism on American soil.

According to Vanessa Cárdenas, Executive Director of America’s Voice:

“Buckle up, indeed. Apparently, there are no rational voices in the House GOP to put the breaks on this madness. House Republicans are showing us their embrace of white nationalism and choice to empower MAGA extremists is in overdrive. Any committee that gives Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Andy Biggs and Paul Gosar a megaphone to advance white nationalist conspiracies about immigration and the border is a hearing about scapegoating and inflaming partisan divides, not seeking solutions about immigration policy. It’s part of the Mayorkas show trial effort that House Republicans have teed up and it’s a dangerous focus at a time that DHS assesses that domestic extremists, including those motivated by nativism, are the greatest threat to public safety. The federal prosecution of the white nationalist who murdered 23 people in an El Paso Walmart employing the “invasion” and “replacement” conspiracy was back in the news this week – just another reminder that House Republicans’ mainstreaming of anti-immigrant distortions and white nationalist conspiracies has a real death toll.”
