Washington, DC —Yesterday was a pivotal day for the politics of immigration and the trajectory of the 2024 presidential campaign.
Amidst a Trump campaign attack ad and ongoing right wing disinformation about her immigration and border responsibilities and record, Vice President Kamala Harris leaned in on the issue and defined sharp contrasts between her and Donald Trump. Most notably, in a new video, the Harris campaign asserts:
“Kamala Harris supports increasing the number of Border Patrol agents. Donald Trump blocked a bill to increase the number of Border Patrol agents … Kamala Harris prosecuted transnational gang members and got them sentenced to prison. Trump is trying to avoid being sentenced to prison … There’s two choices in this election: The one who will fix our broken immigration system and the one who is trying to stop her.”
According to Vanessa Cárdenas, Executive Director of America’s Voice:
“At America’s Voice, we have long counseled that pro-immigrant candidates and lawmakers should lean in on immigration and border issues, draw sharp contrasts with their opponents and define themselves as seeking reforms to our broken immigration system that pair an orderly border with legal pathways and opportunities for long-settled immigrants.
In the face of Donald Trump’s relentless immigration lies, ugliness, and agenda of unsparing mass deportations, VP Harris can and should continue to lean in on the issue and draw sharp contrasts, including between her vision of reform and support for Dreamers, the spouses of U.S. citizens and long-settled families versus the Trump preference for mass deportations and immigration as an issue to run on but not resolve. The punditry and press corps think of immigration as an issue on which Harris must play defense, but she is flipping the script to put the other side on defense instead.”
