Today Representative Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) announced his retirement from Congress. The following is a statement by Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice.
Congressman Luis Gutierrez has been our champion and our leader. Rarely has one person so masterfully combined the power of a member of Congress, the passion of a movement leader, and the love of a community and its allies. He’s been a torch-bearer, a deal-maker and a street-fighter.
Watching him speak on the House floor, you can’t help but be impressed by his dedication to the lives and futures of immigrant families. Listening to him speak at rallies, you can’t help but be inspired by his commitment to building a strong movement of immigrants and allies. Witnessing him walk into a church basement in cities and towns across the nation, you can’t help but be blown away by the love and affection he engenders from the immigrants who pack the halls. Of course, the feeling is mutual.
We are glad he will continue to help build the movement he has helped lead. We need him. As for his leadership role in Congress, it will take a village to replace him.
Luis, thank you, for everything you’ve given, done and will do. You are our American hero.
