Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman is a patriot, an immigrant, a war hero, a man of honor and a defender of democracy. He embodies everything that President Trump hates and fears.
Republican Senators’ acquiescence to President Trump and his abuses have clearly been interpreted by an emboldened and vengeful Trump as a green light to act with authoritarian impunity. As a result, he is lashing out at his supposed enemies and threats.
Fresh off Trump’s efforts to punish New York for its common-sense pro-immigrant policies, Trump’s Friday night firings and Republicans’ meek complicity shows how far the GOP has fallen. They now refuse to stand up for values they once claimed to defend. The image and implications of Lt. Col. Vindman being frog-marched out of the White House by security is a chilling encapsulation of the dangers this president poses to our democracy.
