Frank Sharry: Attacks on Lt. Col. Vindman’s Refugee History and Patriotism “Appalling and Un-American”

Today, Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman is set to become the first White House official to testify to Congress as part of the impeachment inquiry. Ahead of his testimony, conservative talking heads, pro-Trump allies, and some Republicans are slandering Lt. Col. Vindman, including a focus on the fact that he was born in Ukraine. Lt. Col. Vindman, who came to the U.S. at age three and rose to the top of his field, is part of a Jewish refugee family.

The following is a statement from Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice:

Lt. Col. Vindman is a walking embodiment of the American dream and an individual considered above reproach by military professionals and national security colleagues.

The effort to slander Lt. Col. Vindman’s character through ugly insinuations, including those focused on his family’s refugee history, is unacceptable. Though we are no longer surprised by the bottomless ugliness of Trumpism, the idea that the right wing media ecosystem and Republican enablers are going after him based on his country of birth is appalling and un-American.

As his statement says today and his career attests, “I am a patriot.” The same cannot be said for those attacking him with vile dog whistles.
