Frank Sharry: “He’s the right person to undo Trump’s cruelties, advance fair and humane policies, and deliver on the bold change the American people strongly support.”
The following is a statement from Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice, reacting to the news that Alejandro Mayorkas will be nominated to be Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
America and the Biden administration face a huge task to undo Trump’s original sin – his relentless cruelty towards and demonization of immigrants and refugees, and to build through administrative and legislative reform an immigration system that reflects our commitment to being a welcoming nation.
Alejandro Mayorkas is an inspired choice. He’s the right person to undo Trump’s cruelties, advance fair and humane policies, and deliver on the bold change the American people strongly support.
An architect of the popular and successful DACA program, the Cuban-born son of a Holocaust survivor, and a refugee himself, Mayorkas understands intuitively what America at its best stands for and how these values need to be operationalized in law, regulation and policy.
President-elect Biden has committed to an ambitious series of pro-immigrant and pro-refugee policies, including introducing legislation to establish a path to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants. Mayorkas has been confirmed three separate times by the U.S. Senate, and should be again. It’s time to turn the page on the evils of Trumpism and build a system as good as our ideals.
