As the firestorm surrounding Donald Trump’s latest racist comments grows, Ohio faith and civic leaders are demanding Sen. Rob Portman rescind his endorsement of Trump or own the GOP leader’s words.
Throughout his campaign Trump has made headlines with his racism, sexism, and disgusting attacks on the disabled. And yet, Senator Portman endorsed Trump just last month – long after these incidents occurred.
Lynn Tramonte of Ohio’s Voice said, “Since day one, the hallmark of Donald Trump’s campaign has been bigotry, racism, and demagoguery. Trump’s bigoted attack on a Mexican – American Judge overseeing a lawsuit against Trump University is just the latest example. Senator Portman knew who and what he was endorsing when he decided to back Donald Trump. He must rescind his endorsement or come to terms with the fact that he’s endorsing Trump’s racist words and actions.”
Tramonte was joined on the call by Reverend Dr. Jawanza Karriem Colvin, Reverend Gerald Durley, and State Representative Dan Ramos (D-Lorain).
State Representative Dan Ramos (D-Lorain) said, “What strikes me most is Senator Portman’s lack of political courage. It’s truly astonishing to see him continue to stand by Trump despite comments that even Paul Ryan calls the ‘the textbook definition of a racist comment. The Senator continues to insist his support of Trump is ‘appropriate’. Senator Portman racism is never appropriate, no matter how many people voted for it, and continuing to stand by Donald Trump is an endorsement of it.”
Reverend Dr. Jawanza Karriem Colvin of Cleveland posed a series of very pointed questions to the Senator, “How can you claim you’re a Senator for all of Ohio while you continue to support Donald Trump? What level of racism and demagoguery will Trump have to sink to before enough is enough and you’re ready to withdraw your support?”
