Yesterday Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), along with Senators Kristin Gillibrand (D-NY), Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and Charles Schumer (D-NY) introduced the Reuniting Families Act. Under the current system, American families can wait a decade or more to be reunited through the current immigration process. This bill would honor the family as the bedrock of our society by reforming our country’s family-based immigration system, ending lengthy separations and promoting family stability.
The current immigration system, which has not been updated for nearly twenty years, continues to keep American citizens and legal residents separated from their spouses, children, siblings, and parents for years or even decades. Updating the family immigration system will promote legal immigration into the country, and reduce pressure on family members to migrate outside of the legal system.
“Reuniting families separated by our broken immigration system is a core component of comprehensive immigration reform. CONTINUA EL IMPULSO HACIA LA REFORMA MIGRATORIA
Washington, DC – El senador demócrata de New Jersey, Robert Menéndez, junto a sus colegas demócratas Kristin Gillibrand, senadora de Nueva York, y Edward Kennedy, demócrata de Massachusetts, presentaron ayer la Ley de Reunificación Familiar que reforma el actual sistema disfuncional que hace que ciudadanos y residentes legales tengan que esperar una década o más para poder reunirse con sus familiares.
Nuestro sistema migratorio no ha sido reformado por casi 20 años provocando que ciudadanos estadounidenses y residentes legales permanezcan separados de sus cónyuges, hijos, padres y hermanos por años o incluso décadas. Actualizar el sistema de reunificación familiar promoverá la inmigración legal a este país al reducir la presión de los familiares de tratar de inmigrar a Estados Unidos fuera de la vía legal.
“La reunificación familiar es un componente central de la reforma migratoria amplia. Aplaudo al senador Menéndez y a sus colegas por presentar este importante proyecto de ley”, dijo Frank Sharry, fundador y director ejecutivo de America’s Voice.
