Washington, DC — The following is a statement from David Leopold, legal advisor to America’s Voice and Immigration Group Leader at UB Greensfelder LLP:
“Once again a cadre of red states, led by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, have tapped the anti-immigrant judicial pipeline in a cynical effort to kill an immigration program that’s designed to keep American families together. The new program, which allows undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens to apply for temporary lawful status and employment authorization, was attacked Thursday afternoon by 16 Republican attorneys general in a lawsuit filed in the Eastern District of Texas. Why Texas? Because that’s where the pipeline begins, with a stop at the equally pliant Fifth Circuit, then directly to the right wing dominated U.S. Supreme Court. For over a decade now Paxton and his nativist allies have used this strategy to attack immigration policy solutions, knowing these federal judges will gladly do their bidding to kill efforts to keep American families together. Unfortunately, too many federal judges have shown themselves to be willing accomplices instead of jurists.”
