Divisive, Ineffective Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants Is Bleeding Taxpayers Dry and Dragging The County’s Reputation Through The Mud
The saga in Prince William County continues. The county’s controversial crackdown on immigrants, enacted with great fanfare in 2007, is continuing to unravel. In a double whammy to the taxpayers of Prince William County, the price tag for the county’s anti-immigrant policy continues to skyrocket, while at the same time the community’s reputation is being dragged through the mud by the policy’s author and staunchest advocate, County Board Chairman Corey Stewart (R-At Large).
Last week, Stewart proposed a property tax increase of 8.25% to help pay for the expensive and ineffective anti-immigrant policy. This week, the Board of Supervisors voted to slash police funding by over $3 million in order to keep the budget in check and County Supervisor Frank J. Principi (D-Woodbridge) announced plans to repeal provisions of the county policy that he believes should be handled by the Federal government.
“Cory Stewart’s divisive and ineffective anti-immigrant policy is costing the taxpayers more and more money and getting him in hotter and hotter water,” said Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice. “Prince William County needs leaders in Virginia and in Washington, DC who are willing to work toward solutions to the illegal immigration issue that are tough, effective and don’t come with a huge price tag.”
