Ohio Mayors, Local Officials, and Religious and Community Leaders Urge Trump Administration to Preserve DACA, Congress to Pass a Permanent Solution

Cleveland, OH – More than 100 Ohio civic leaders are backing the new “We Are With Dreamers” statement, first reported in an article by Alan Gomez of USA Today.  The statement calls on President Trump to preserve the successful Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and for Congress to pass a standalone version of the bipartisan Dream Act.

Mayors Nan Whaley (Dayton), Lydia Mihalik (Findlay), Andrew J. Ginther (Columbus), and David J. Berger (City of Lima) join City Council Members from Columbus and Dayton, the Police Chief of Lorain, and scores of Ohio religious leaders and others in civil society to express their unwavering support for Ohio’s DACA-mented taxpayers.  Additional leaders can add their names by clicking here.

This follows a letter signed by over 1,300 Catholic educators, including several from Ohio, and a national mayors’ day of action in which more than sixty-six mayors in twenty-nine states plus DC took public action to urge President Trump to protect DACA and Dreamers.

Said Lynn Tramonte, Director of Ohio’s Voice:

The highly successful DACA program has benefited both Ohio and America, as well as individual DACA recipients.  It makes economic and moral sense, because it allows talented young people who grew up in our state to continue making important contributions.  We need leaders at all levels of government to stand up for policies that move us forward, together.  The forces against DACA want to pit one group of Ohioans against another.  The ‘We Are With Dreamers’ statement is important, because it’s about rejecting the politics of division and doing what is right.

A fact sheet on the impact of DACA in Ohio is available here.  A more detailed memo, with economic and polling data, is available here.

The complete list of Ohio signatories as of August 30 is pasted below.  For a copy of the letter, and a full list of governors, state attorneys general, mayors, state legislators, city and county officials, and leaders from faith communities, law enforcement, and civic life who signed on nationwide, visit WithDreamers.com.
