Today, in an effort to block the confirmation of Sessions by the United States Senate, a large coalition of civil rights, domestic violence, LGBTQ rights and other progressive groups are holding a call-in day urging Senators to vote against Sessions.

As the xenophobic Senator from Alabama, Jeff Sessions has spent his entire political career criminalizing people of color, associating with a known hate group, and attacking hard-working immigrants. America’s Voice has documented Sessions’ long history of hate.
Sessions’ legislative record is full of red flags and troubling positions that make him uniquely unqualified to serve as our nation’s chief lawyer and civil rights officer. A few examples:

In 2006, Jeff Sessions, during a Senate speech, maligned every immigrant from the Dominican Republic, claiming no one from the country had a “provable skill”

In 2013, Jeff Sessions opposed the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act because it afforded protections to victims who were undocumented

Knowing Jeff Sessions’ full record, as we do, is why we cannot stand by and allow him to be confirmed.
Our justice system needs to do more to protect civil rights, especially the rights of people of color and immigrants. Confirming Jeff Sessions as Attorney General would be a move in the wrong direction.

Not only is Senator Sessions unfit for this job, but he won’t even come clean to the Judiciary Committee about his full record. The required questionnaire he filled out withheld years of meetings, speeches, and interviews — including details from the 1986 hearing that denied him a federal judgeship for being racially insensitive — presumably because he knew the content would be damning. Shockingly, Sessions also took credit for work on civil rights cases that he did not do.
We cannot let an anti-immigrant extremist like Sessions become our nation’s top civil rights officer, which is why we need to do everything in our power to block his confirmation.
