With Donald Trump’s appearance as host of Saturday Night Live just days away, Latino and immigration groups, along with their allies, have collected over 460,000 petition signatures (with a big help from Change.org, CREDO Action and MoveOn.org) telling Lorne Michaels and SNL that Donald Trump’s #RacismIsntFunny.
On Monday, the CHC released a strongly worded statement directed at Lorne Michaels highlighting several recent instances where Trump supporters have beat or harassed Latinos after hearing his anti-immigrant and anti-Latino speeches.
Therefore, be it resolved that the Congressional Hispanic Caucus calls upon NBCUniversal, Broadway Video, and SNL Executive Producer Lorne Michaels to disinvite Mr. Trump from hosting Saturday Night Live because racism is not funny; and
Be it further resolved, that the Congressional Hispanic Caucus urges NBCUniversal to stand by its earlier commitment to end its relationship with Mr. Trump because the values of “respect and dignity for all people” are more important than ratings and ad revenues.
A new video from Voto Latino Action Fund shows the true impact of Donald Trump’s words and captures many of the instances mentioned in the CHC’s full statement.
While Trump’s racism isn’t funny, groups calling out NBC for allowing Trump to host the show have responded with some pretty hilarious and biting content.
Color Correct News (one of the new shows at Latino Rebels Network with anchor Rick Najera) created this parody interview with Trump. Be sure to watch and share it on Facebook!
And the United Farm Workers also responded with stinging humor of their own releasing cartoons by artist Ignacio Gomez.
The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda, a group representing 40 of the largest Latino organizations in the nation and the L.A.-based National Hispanic Media Coalition are also urging NBC to reconsider the Trump booking.
Alex Nogales, president of the NHMC, told LAWeekly he’s trying to get Lorne Michaels on the phone. “They told me he was not going to talk,” Nogales said.
The NHLA, NHMC, and groups running #RacismIsntFunny campaigns are planning a petition delivery on Wednesday. We’ll have more information on that as it develops.
