The introduction of the Agricultural Job Opportunities, Benefits and Security Act of 2009 (AgJOBS) in both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives is an important step forward towards fixing the broken immigration system and shows the continued momentum behind comprehensive immigration reform. U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and U.S. Representatives Adam Putnam (R-FL) and Howard Berman (D-CA) are introducing the legislation in both chambers of Congress today. AgJOBS, which would provide earned immigration status for experienced farm workers, would protect farmworkers from exploitative working conditions while providing agricultural employers with a stable, legal labor force.

The bill, which reflects years of negotiation, has a broad range of support from labor unions, farmworkers, the agriculture industry, civil rights and immigration advocacy organizations and religious groups. The wide range of support for AgJOBS demonstrates broad recognition that Washington needs to address and tackle practical fixes for the immigration system and charts a path forward for comprehensive reform – in fact, the U.S. Senate included AgJOBS in the bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill that it passed in 2006.

AgJOBS evidencia mayor impulso en favor de la reforma migratoria amplia
Washington, DC – La presentación hoy del proyecto de ley AgJOBS en ambas cámaras del Congreso supone otro paso significativo en los esfuerzos por componer nuestro maltrecho sistema migratorio y refleja además el impulso del movimiento hacia una reforma migratoria integral.
La medida AgJOBS, presentada por la senadora Dianne Feinstein, demócrata de California, y por los congresistas Adam Putnam, republicano de Florida, y Howard Berman, demócrata de California, ofrece una vía de legalización adquirida para trabajadores agrícolas al tiempo que los protege de la explotación laboral. Asimismo, provee a los agricultores de una mano de obra estable y legal.
“El sistema prevaleciente es insostenible y hay que reformarlo. No funciona adecuadamente ni para los agricultores, ni para los trabajadores agrícolas, ni para los consumidores estadounidenses”, afirmó Frank Sharry, fundador y director ejecutivo de America’s Voice.
“AgJOBS promueve una solución para estos problemas y es otra indicación del impulso que se ha generado en favor de la reforma migratoria amplia. Este amplio apoyo es indicativo del reconocimiento de que Washington tiene que buscar soluciones prácticas a los problemas migratorios y trazar la ruta hacia una reforma migratoria amplia. De hecho, el Senado incluyó una versión de AgJOBS en el proyecto de reforma integral que aprobó en 2006.
