In response to Donald Trump’s immigration speech, Frank Sharry of America’s Voice issued this statement:
“So much for Trump walking away from his support of deporting 11 million undocumented immigrants who are deeply rooted in America.
For all the talk of softening, this was a very hardline speech. The intended outcome of Trump’s policy is to deport or force out most, if not all, of the 11 million undocumented immigrants settled in this country. The packaging might have been tweaked a bit, but the content is the same: get out. As for ways to gain legal status or gain readmission, for the vast majority there’s no hope at all.
To put it bluntly, this is mass deportation with a topping of self-deportation. It is still the most extreme position of any modern presidential candidate. It is deeply unpopular with voters, and profoundly un-American.
It is time for the pundits to stop the charade that somehow Trump is softening; it is time to stop giving Trump the benefit of discussing the finer points of policy. It is time to stop pretending this is a matter of tone. This is a man who has no shred of decency, is a threat to the rule of law and is a purveyor of darkness. We will rue the day as a nation that we refused to accept the threat he poses.”
