“Stand Up To Hate” Tour: Rep. Gutierrez, Coalition Of Groups Kick Off Effort To Naturalize 1,000,000 New Citizens

Rep. Luis Gutiérrez and a coalition of groups want to get one million new citizens naturalized this year to vote against ugly anti-Latino, anti-immigrant, and anti-Muslim rhetoric.

In past years that may have been a pretty lofty number, but recent offensive comments from Republicans have galvanized Latinos and immigrant across the nation to launch naturalization efforts, with many focusing on battleground states like Nevada and Colorado.

The partnership — featuring the Latino Victory Foundation, National Partnership for New Americans, Mi Familia Vota, iAmerica Action, and SEIU — will include some 100 workshops across the United States, in what’s been dubbed the “Stand Up To Hate” tour.

Rep. Gutiérrez will be taking part in several of these workshops, including one in Chicago.

“One of the main reasons we’re recommending people naturalize now is to stand up to the hate rhetoric of this political season,” said Rep. Gutierrez during a press call.

“Our message is to the Latinos, to Mexicans, to the Muslims, to the immigrant communities of our nation. Yes, get angry, but then naturalize, register and vote.”
