Since the Civil War, the 14th Amendment to our Constitution has guaranteed citizenship to all children born here in America — regardless of their race, class, or creed.
Well, now Senators David Vitter (R-LA) and Rand Paul (R-KY) want it scrapped. Last week, they introduced an offensive resolution to revoke our 14th amendment citizenship rights, which we’ve been enjoying for, oh, the last 150 years.
The idea is deemed ludicrous by most in Congress, which may be why the measure has yet to gain any co-sponsors, aside from the aforementioned gentlemen.
According to Jennifer Rubin, conservative blogger at the Washington Post:
We are talking about children who had no say in their parents’ decision-making and/or who can’t determine the legal status of their parents. They know no other country than the United States. And Vitter and Rand want to go searching for these children, presumably deny them employment and/or benefits and, I guess, toss them from the country, so that we will dissuade other adults (who exist primarily in Lindsey Graham’s imagination) from coming here?
It is this sort of harebrained idea, unreasoned and extreme, that raised concerns about Paul’s judgment during the campaign.
The 14th amendment serves to protect us from opportunistic politicians, including the likes of David Vitter and Rand Paul, whose latest move only serves to take our country backwards.
Congress needs to show leadership, speak up for American values, and put an end to this disgusting attack on the constitution. Join us in sending our leaders in Congress a fax — tell them to reject Senators Vitter and Paul’s dangerous move to scrap the 14th amendment.
