Vanessa Cárdenas: “While President Trump has Unleashed a New War in the Middle East, His Existing War against Immigrants and American Communities Continues Unchecked and Unabated”

Washington, DC — The following is a statement from Vanessa Cárdenas, Executive Director of America’s Voice:

“While President Trump has unleashed a new war in the Middle East, his existing war against immigrants and American communities continues unchecked and unabated. Americans are struggling to afford rent, groceries and healthcare, yet this administration is embarking on a costly new war in the Middle East on top of their unprecedented spending on the cruelty, chaos, and harms of their anti-immigrant mass deportation crusade – including the $150 billion in existing allocated DHS funding.

And in a classic example of ‘do as I say, not as I do,’ the Trump administration encourages the Iranian people to stand up and use their voices to speak out against repression while   cracking down on the American people who are attempting to do the same here at home. Just last week, mere hours before the attacks on Iran started, Trump’s AG Pam Bondi announced federal charges against 30 more Americans who were engaged in peaceful protest in Minneapolis, exercising their constitutional first amendment rights to speak out against mass deportation.

It’s clear this administration thinks they are above the law and don’t need to adhere to constitutional checks and balances – whether it’s ignoring the Constitution and bypassing the war powers role of Congress or ignoring federal judges and court orders about immigration. All of it’s a reminder why we need more accountability, more oversight, and not another penny in funding for this administration’s recklessness and mass deportation crusade.”
