Vanessa Cárdenas Statement Ahead of DHS Shutdown

Washington, DC — The following is a statement from Vanessa Cárdenas, Executive Director of America’s Voice, ahead of the anticipated Department of Homeland Security shutdown:

On the eve of President’s Day weekend and the likely shutdown of DHS, President Trump, de facto President Stephen Miller, and their allies in Congress are creating chaos, insecurity, and division due to their unrelenting mass deportation crusade all for the sake of political power.

They have turbo-charged violence and fear among both citizens and immigrants – in cities like Minneapolis and in “small towns and exurban America,” as The New York Times reminds us today.

Yet the real bright spot at this moment in history is that the American people are standing up, pushing back and letting our political leaders know who is the boss and who is in charge: the people. The public is saying “enough is enough” and is recognizing that the mass deportation agenda threatens our collective  safety and our values.

This administration and their GOP allies own all of it – the shutdown, the chaos, and the onus to listen to the American people’s hunger for change.”
