Washington, DC — The following is a statement from Vanessa Cárdenas, Executive Director of America’s Voice, reacting to the introduction of The Dignity Act of 2025, introduced today by a bipartisan group of 20 House members, 10 Democrats and 10 Republicans, led by Representatives Veronica Escobar (D-TX) and María Elvira Salazar (R-FL).
“The family, community and economic impacts of mass deportation are forcing an overdue conversation on alternative visions and real immigration solutions. The Dignity Act – like the recent immigration framework from Senator Ruben Gallego and the immigration policy blueprint from the Center for American Progress – is a step forward and one that broadly aligns with the strong consensus of the American public for balanced immigration solutions.
As an organization whose North Star remains securing protections, opportunities, and legal status for the deeply rooted undocumented immigrants in America, we are particularly heartened to see the Dignity Act provisions providing a path to citizenship for Dreamers and a path to legality for long-established undocumented immigrants. As new Gallup polling finds, more than three-fourths of the country – including a majority of Republicans – support such measures.
While we do have concerns about some provisions of the legislative package, we recognize this is just a starting point. In fact, our questions are as much on political will as on the particular policy details. In particular, the same Members who just voted for an unprecedented surge of ICE and immigration enforcement money in the budget bill and are initial co-sponsors of the Dignity Act should take lead on explaining how they plan to make legislative progress. We look forward to working with the cosponsors of this bill and other lawmakers on lasting and real solutions to our immigration system at this moment of crisis for immigrant communities across America.”
