Vanessa Cárdenas on SCOTUS Birthright Citizenship Ruling

Washington, DC – Today, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of birthright citizenship, affirming over a century and a half of legal precedent and the constitutional guarantee that any child born on American soil is a U.S. citizen.

According to Vanessa Cárdenas, Executive Director of America’s Voice:

“Today’s ruling upholds the Constitution and protects the rights of all Americans from Trump’s mass deportation fantasies.

The promise of America includes the constitutional right that every child born here starts with equal footing and with the same rights and protections regardless of their parents’ immigration status. This, in turn, has afforded our nation stability and social cohesion. We are strongest when citizenship is secure, equal, and grounded in the Constitution — not subject to political change.

It’s no secret that Donald Trump and Stephen Miller are doing everything they can to rescind the rights of immigrants and their children as part of a broader effort to strip legal protections and status from as many people in this country as possible. Their effort seeks to turn back the clock and fundamentally change who gets to be an American.

As we celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary we are grateful the Supreme Court reaffirmed one of the most cherished constitutional rights. We are here. We belong. This is our country too.”
