Senator Kirk Joins Rest of His Party in Reckless Anti-Immigrant Vote

Today, Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL) sided with anti-immigration restrictionists in his Party by voting to invoke cloture on a House-passed Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill that includes unnecessary, anti-immigrant riders and plays politics with the operations of this critical department.

Instead of calling on his colleagues to responsibly commit the necessary homeland security resources to the Department of Homeland security, Kirk chose to try to pressure the President to walk away from his immigration enforcement policy announcements.

Following is a statement from Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice:

The GOP’s craven willingness to risk the nation’s security in order to deport Dreamers and the parents of American children is both reckless and irresponsible. It is shameful that Senator Kirk voted to ensure that DREAMers can be deported—IL DREAMers like Aaima Sayed.  Aaima was brought to the US from Pakistan when she was 3 years old.  She grew up in Chicago.  She was in the top 10% of her high school class and graduated from Rutgers University magna cum laude.  Now, thanks to DACA, Aaima is a student at Loyola Medical School fulfilling her dream to become a physician.

Yet Senator Kirk joined his fellow Republicans in their strategy of playing politics with the nation’s homeland security, all to ensure that Aaima and other DREAMers like her—as well as the parents of U.S. Citizens–could be deported.

Does Senator Kirk really want to go into the 2016 elections with the Steve King/Ted Cruz immigration platform?
