Former Arizona State Senator Russell Pearce – the man behind the nation’s first, “show me your papers” anti-immigrant law – admitted an important truth in a new interview with The Washington Post. Pearce said in reference to Mitt Romney, “His immigration policy is identical to mine…Attrition by enforcement. It’s identical to mine – enforce the laws. We have good laws, just enforce them.”
According to Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice, “When you get a bear hug from the man who made discrimination official state policy, ruined the state’s reputation and got recalled by voters in his district, you know you’ve got a serious political problem. Mitt Romney has lurched so far to the right on immigration the nativist wing nuts love him.”
During the Republican primary, Mitt Romney endorsed the Pearce-authored and costly SB1070 law as a “model” for the nation, while outlining “self deportation” as his policy vision for the country. Pearce is just one of the “who’s who” of prominent anti-immigrant leaders and lawmakers who have endorsed Romney, joining “attrition through enforcement” legal architect Kris Kobach, anti-immigrant congressional voices like Representatives Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) and Lamar Smith (R-TX), current Arizona Governor Jan Brewer (R) and former California Governor and champion of Proposition 187 Pete Wilson.
