Washington, DC — Last Friday, before Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and the House Freedom Caucus scuttled the Senate funding deal in order to continue the DHS shutdown, America’s Voice highlighted the reality that the mass deportation obsession remained paramount for President Trump and de facto President Stephen Miller. This despite recent GOP attempts to signal they’ve turned the page on their deeply unpopular agenda.
The events of the past few days have only underscored those points we raised Friday.
According to Joanna Kuebler, Chief of Programs at America’s Voice:
“A new reality has emerged in the immigration debate: while the politics of immigration have changed, the mass deportation and anti-immigrant obsession of Donald Trump, Stephen Miller, and their GOP enablers have not.
Instead of listening to the American people, Speaker Johnson chose to bend the knee to Miller and the mass deportation crusade. The Republicans’ obsession with mass deportation is especially jarring in contrast to the record attendance and tremendous energy on display throughout the country at No Kings rallies this weekend. Along with demanding the Trump Administration and his Congressional supporters reduce inflation, cap high prices and stop foreign wars, the mainstream, American consensus also wants to stop the violent, unmasked and out of control federal mass deportation machine and chart an alternative vision to fixing our broken immigration system. This means not another dollar for ICE or CBP unless and until real change and accountability are delivered.
You would think by now that Trump, Miller, and Speaker Johnson would be ready to listen to the will of the people. Instead, they will try to message their way out of a moral, economic and political problem of their own making.”
