More Than a “Hiccup” – Why Problems with Mass Deportation Crusade Go Beyond DHS Musical Chairs and Messaging

Washington, DC — As the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs begins its hearing on the nomination of Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) to become the next Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Republicans are desperate to pretend that the problems with the Trump/Miller mass deportation crusade are in the past and will be remedied by a change in leadership at DHS and revamped messaging.

Why? As a Punchbowl News article, “The Latino Vote Could Crush Republicans” details, the GOP remarketing of mass deportation is being driven by political concerns – not substantive recognition of the actual harms to the nation. As the Punchbowl story captures, Speaker Mike Johnson has been saying

“‘We got a little hiccup with some of the Hispanic, Latino voters because some of the immigration enforcement was viewed to be overzealous.’ Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-Fla.) has been loudly sounding the alarm that Trump’s deportation regime is unpopular among her majority-Latino Miami-area seat. … Republicans like Johnson claim that under new DHS leadership, Trump’s immigration agenda is on ‘course correction mode.’”

Yet the majority of Americans, including Latino voters, are demanding real changes – not window dressing reforms.

According to Joanna Kuebler, Chief of Programs at America’s Voice:It’s more than a ‘hiccup,’ Speaker Johnson. And it will take more than a ‘course correction’ to steer the Titanic away from the ever-present iceberg of mass deportation. The American public, including Latino voters, is witnessing and experiencing the cruelty, chaos and violence that’s happening and is calling for a dramatic change in course. This means actually reining in the mass deportation agenda and realigning Republicans’ colossally misplaced priorities – not playing musical chairs with DHS leadership or revamping messaging to whitewash the reality on the ground.”
