AMERICA’S VOICE REACTS TO SCOTUS RULING AFFECTING BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP
In response to today’s Supreme Court’s ruling in Trump v. CASA, America’s Voice Executive Director Vanessa Cárdenas says that the decision not only weakens the judicial branch and its essential role as a check and balance against executive overreach, “but also threatens to unravel the very promise that a child born in America is American. If the Trump Administration succeeds, millions of children born in U.S. soil will be stateless … Make no mistake: this is part of the Trump-Miller agenda to redefine who counts in America—and to decide who gets to call themselves American.” Read more here.
JUSTICE SOTOMAYOR CAPTURES UN-AMERICAN REALITY: LAWLESS DEPORTATIONS WITH IMPUNITY AND NO ACCOUNTABILITY
This week, the court also offered a green light to the administration’s efforts to deport immigrants to third countries without due process or any accountability. As Justice Sotomayor wrote in a dissent, “The government has made clear in word and deed that it feels itself unconstrained by law, free to deport anyone anywhere without notice or an opportunity to be heard.” Now, not only could our neighbors be kidnapped from our streets, but could also be deported to a country they’ve never even visited before, responded Cárdenas. “What is playing out before our eyes is at odds with democratic norms and basic American values and interests.” Read more here.
THE COSTS OF MASS DEPORTATION ARE SOARING
New reporting highlights the economic costs of raids that are overwhelming nursing home care, agricultural and construction workers and threatening regional economies; the public safety costs of the obsessive focus on immigration enforcement above real threats, including terrorism; and the human and moral cost to our nation – from the outrageous story of the father of three Marines being beaten and abducted by ICE to the horrific story of a pregnant mother delivering a stillborn baby while in detention. “Make no mistake: the Trump/Miller campaign against immigrants is bringing real harm to every American,” said Cárdenas. RAIDS: CRUELTY AND TERROR AS THE NORTH STAR
In her weekly column, America’s Voice consultant Maribel Hastings writes that while Trump’s attack on Iran has dominated headlines, it doesn’t mean his war against immigrants has cooled. “Reported stories show that cruelty is the North Star of this administration, and its objective is to sow terror.” She also highlights the violent arrest of a dad of three Marines. “With Trump, you do not have to read between the lines. He is doing all that he said he was going to do, and more.” Her column was also published in outlets including La Opinión, Radio Billingüe, and La Tribuna Hispana. FAITH LEADERS BRING MORAL CLARITY AS THEY STAND IN SOLIDARITY WITH IMMIGRANTS
San Diego Bishop-elect Michael Pham, a former refugee, was among faith leaders to bear witness and support immigrants at their immigration court hearings last week. No one was abducted that day. He said ICE agents “scattered.” All across the nation, leaders from many faiths have mobilized to protect their communities, in particular in L.A., where the administration deployed troops against peaceful Americans. Faith leaders are undeterred. “In Scripture and in my faith tradition, it says the two greatest commandments are to love the Lord your God with all your heart and to love your neighbor as yourself,” one leader said. YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS THIS
This week, Rep. Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) led a shadow hearing exploring how the administration’s immigration courthouse enforcement isn’t about policy, it’s about an attack on due process. These tactics spread fear, targeting those who are simply trying to follow the rules by attending their appointments. “These actions only serve to make the immigration system even more chaotic and unjust than it already is,” said Rep. Jayapal. She was joined by legal experts including retired immigration judge A. Ashley Tabaddor, who said that when courts are transformed into enforcement zones, it deters participation and erodes public trust. “And when that happens, it doesn’t just fail immigrants. It fails all of us.” Read more here.
