TRUMP DEMOTED; STEPHEN MILLER IN CHARGE

We weren’t exactly surprised by the news that the White House backtracked on Trump’s supposed enforcement “pause” targeted against agriculture, restaurant, and hospitality industries. It simply reinforced what we already know – Stephen Miller continues to exert supreme control over immigration policy in the White House. “Make no mistake,” said America’s Voice Executive Director Vanessa Cárdenas. “President Trump may be the one sitting behind the Resolute Desk, but Stephen Miller is the one running the show when it comes to immigration in the Trump White House.” Read more here.

MASS DEPORTATION MAKES US ALL LESS SAFE

As AV continues to ask, “At what cost” to America is the administration willing to go to advance its mass deportation agenda? A new story in the generally Trump-friendly New York Post highlights that Miller’s obsession with arrest quotas and indiscriminately rounding up as many immigrants as possible comes at a direct cost to public safety and targeting public safety threats. “All that matters is numbers, pure numbers. Quantity over quality,” one ICE official reportedly said. “Stephen Miller’s goal isn’t about public safety or immigration solutions, it’s about purging immigrants from our nation no matter the cost,” Cárdenas responds. DEMAGOGUERY OVERRIDES THE ECONOMY

In her weekly column, America’s Voice consultant Maribel Hastings expands on the Trump administration’s backtrack of the supposed “pause” on certain raids, writing that the administration is “putting demagoguery ahead of the economic well-being of the country, in the face of the impact that mass deportations would have.” She notes one economic analysis finding that undocumented workers represent 5% of the U.S. workforce. “Imagine what would happen to the economy if 5% of the workforce was deported,” she asks. Her column was also published in outlets including La Opinión, Radio Billingüe, and La Tribuna Hispana. Read her column in English here and Spanish here.

ONE OF THE BIGGEST PROTESTS IN U.S. HISTORY

Last weekend was historic. Millions of Americans across the country joined ”No Kings Day” rallies to defend our democracy, to speak out against the unfettered power grab by Trump, and to oppose Miller’s mass deportation machine. The rallies drew more than 5 million people, making it one of the largest protests in American history. One consistent theme was the fierce opposition to the Trump/Miller mass deportation crusade. In L.A., Maria Rodriguez explained how important it was as a Dreamer and “as an American” to “fight for what’s right, to stand up for our rights.” Read more here.

Juneteenth, which was celebrated this week, commemorates when news of freedom finally reached enslaved Black Americans in Texas following the end of the Civil War. And, it’s a national holiday that can’t be fully observed without also celebrating the contributions of millions of Black immigrants, who contribute billions in taxes annually, and play essential roles in industries critical to millions of Americans, including healthcare.
