THE THREAT TO SUSPEND HABEAS CORPUS IS THE LATEST EVIDENCE HOW THE ‘INVASION’ LIE IS CENTRAL TO CONSTITUTIONAL ATTACKS
Embedded in Stephen Miller’s recent, chilling comments that the Trump administration is considering suspending the writ of habeas corpus is another reminder that its broader assault on core constitutional pillars rests on the dangerous “invasion” lie, which is not only a deadly conspiracy theory, but also is an assessment directly undercut by this administration’s own intelligence agencies. This discussion about suspending habeas corpus now shows an administration reeling and using this lie to threaten our rights and freedoms. This should “raise alarms among all Americans,” as America’s Voice Executive Director Vanessa Cárdenas said. Read more here.
AMERICANS RECOIL AT TRUMP’S FAMILY SEPARATION AND SENSELESS CRUELTY
The public is recoiling after experiencing the first months of the Trump administration’s mass detention and deportation assault across the U.S., including seeing families ripped apart and watching due process rights trampled in the process. In one gutting example, video showed Massachusetts police holding a girl to the ground as ICE agents abducted her mother. “The teenage girl is screaming throughout the entirety of the incident,” NBC News reported. “Mass deportation is grim, unsettling and un-American when seen up close,” responded Cárdenas. AS COSTS OF TRUMP’S ANTI-IMMIGRANT OBSESSION MOUNT, EMPLOYERS CALL FOR BETTER WAY FORWARD
The growing price of Trump’s ugly mass deportation agenda could also not be more clear. Across the country, employers and industry leaders are speaking out against the unnecessary cruelty and costs of attacking immigrant workers. In Hawaii, prized Kona coffee fields have become a target for senseless arrests. Bruce Cornwell, a coffee grower, is among business figures urging for legalization, not deportation. “If we don’t have these immigrant workers, our coffee will be hurting,” he said. “The government should make it easier for these people to come here and work.” Read more here.
TRUMP’S ANTI-IMMIGRANT OBSESSION IS A BOON FOR DRUG AND GUN TRAFFICKERS
Drug and gun pushers are likely thrilled at finding out that Trump’s nativist obsession is taking heat off their own backs. As The New York Times reported, the administration has decided that about 2,000 F.B.I., drug, and gun agents now have to divert investigative resources and manpower away from their own probes in order to help with abducting hard-working immigrant moms, dads, and other long-settled contributors – all at direct cost to crucial public safety and active investigations. “The Trump administration is making America less safe,” as Vanessa Cárdenas responded. TRUMP’S ‘INVASION’ LIES HAVE REAL-LIFE CONSEQUENCES
In her weekly column, America’s Voice consultant Maribel Hastings expands on how the administration’s “invasion” lie is leading to attacks on communities beyond those lacking legal immigration status, including U.S. citizens “and people with a certain amount of power, like judges or politicians who Trump considers ‘enemies,’ or those who ‘get in the way’ of his exercise in authoritarianism.” Considering the significant blowback to Trump’s overreach, this could include many Americans. Her column was also published in outlets including La Opinión, El Periódico USA, and La Tribuna Hispana. Read her column in English here and Spanish here.
IF WE STAND UP FOR EACH OTHER, WE CAN PROTECT EACH OTHER
Blowback from angered and caring community members has played a critical role in several local immigration wins across the nation, highlighting the need to continue speaking out in defense of our immigrant neighbors – and each other. In Arizona, community pressure helped stop the imminent deportation of a Guatemalan woman who had just given birth to her infant at a Tucson hospital after spending two days wandering the harsh desert. Others targeted under the administration’s nativist obsessions have also won important victories that shouldn’t get lost in the daily flood of often devastating news. Read more here.
‘YOU ARE MAKING AMERICANS LESS SAFE’
The House reconciliation bill currently being debated by the Congress would supercharge immigration detention and deportations at the detriment of all Americans, as emphasised by Rep. Bennie Thompson (MS-02) during a recent budget hearing. “Why should we give [DHS] an extra $44 billion?” he asked DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. “Is it to deport American citizen children with cancer?” Click here to watch and share this important moment.

Hundreds rallied outside the Supreme Court on Thursday, where justices heard oral arguments in the case regarding the Trump administration’s unconstitutional effort to terminate birthright citizenship – a protection enshrined in the 14th Amendment – via executive order. See a helpful explainer from FWD.us here. Outside the courthouse, rally attendees held signs that affirmed the 160-year-old constitutional principle that everyone born in America is a citizen, NBC Washington reported. “American-born children are American children,” read one sign. Check out more images from yesterday’s rally here, and we’ll make sure to keep you posted on updates in the case.
