Today, the Southern Poverty Law Center released the first installment of a devastating report on Stephen Miller, the top immigration adviser to Donald Trump. The report reveals hundreds of emails, leaked by a former Breitbart editor, that show Miller promoting white nationalist ideas about race and immigration. Miller promoted the work of white nationalist and racist writers and publications to direct Breitbart’s coverage. He also made his animus towards people of color abundantly clear. We’ve known he has long had close ties to white nationalist leaders like Richard Spencer and Peter Brimelow. Today’s report only confirms that with fresh details.
It’s particularly significant that these emails were revealed today, as the United States Supreme Court heard arguments on the Trump administration’s decision to end DACA. As the New York Times reported this week, Miller was a prime instigator of that decision.
According to Pili Tobar, Deputy Director of America’s Voice:
The same anti-immigrant, racist and white nationalist beliefs that are exposed in Stephen Miller’s emails are the driving force behind the Trump administration’s cruel and inefficient immigration policy. On the day that the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the DACA case, this report serves as a reminder that Miller’s push to end DACA was not based on any legal principles, but out of his very deep white nationalist tendencies. The same tendencies that led to the caging of children, family separation, and ending TPS despite the consequences to communities across the country and our foreign policy. Today, the lives of 700,000 young people are at risk because of Miller’s work and dangerous views. We owe great thanks to SPLC for revealing again who Miller is and the real intentions behind the Trump administration’s immigration policy decisions.
