ICYMI: Scathing Editorial in La Opinión: “Trump Humiliates Us”

“Trump’s United States is a medieval fort that defends itself against immigrants and globalists.”

On Wednesday, the nation’s leading Spanish-language daily, La Opinión, based in Los Angeles, excoriated President Donald Trump’s speech to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday in New York. Under the headline “Trump humiliates us” [“Trump nos humilla”], the editorial says the President’s appeal to nationalism is an embarrassment, committing “the capital sin of the authoritarian” mixing the concepts of patriotism with nationalism and conflicting with the deeply held values of the United States.

Excerpts from the editorial, translated by the staff of America’s Voice en Español, appear below and the original editorial in Spanish can be found here.

The speech before the United Nations was just one more in the series of humiliations that the United States suffers at the hands of its president.

Trump brought nationalist paranoia to the UN. He showed that today our country is defined by its fears, rather than its values. He is the one that confuses temper with fear. That is not who we are.

Trump’s United States is a medieval fort that defends itself against immigrants and globalists. It is a world power that looks over the wall with distrust and fear of a changing world. His ambition is for the rest of the nations to face the challenges in the same way. With the same fear and cowardice. Those who hide behind the nationalist spirit.

Trump commits the capital sin of the authoritarian: mixing patriotism with nationalism. Patriotism is defined from the love of culture, soil, people with common life experiences. Trump’s nationalism arises from the need for confrontation. It needs a threat or an enemy that opposes that culture, that soil and those people. And if the threat or the enemy does not exist, they are manufactured.
