Washington, DC – As we detailed in a memo last week, Republicans had clearly planned, and hoped, for a more chaotic post-Title 42 environment to use as a cudgel for their relentless political attacks on immigration and the border. Yet contrary to apocalyptic predictions about the end of Title 42, the number of migrants crossing the border has hit its lowest point since Biden took office due to a number of factors.
In response, Republicans and right wing media haven’t adapted or changed their pre-baked plans one bit and are instead proceeding as if their predictions of post-Title 42 chaos had come true.
Tomorrow, in the latest evidence of the above storyline, the House Homeland Security Committee will hold a hearing titled “Examining DHS’ Failure to Prepare for the Termination of Title 42.”
According to Vanessa Cárdenas, Executive Director of America’s Voice:
“Tomorrow’s hearing is the latest in a long list of proof points that for Republicans, the facts on the ground are secondary to their quest of using immigration as red meat for their base. Republicans and the right wing media would rather keep their base inflamed and outraged about supposed border chaos than acknowledging the reality after Title 42. Instead of working toward long term solutions that our country desperately needs to fix our broken immigration system, they continue to prioritize extremism and obstruction.”
