Washington, DC — This year’s edition of Gallup’s annual deep-dive immigration poll underscores that the more Americans witness the overreach and chaos of the Trump/Miller mass deportation agenda, the less they like it.
In the Gallup poll, detailed below, more than three-fourths of respondents – including a majority of Republicans – recognize that immigration is a “good thing” for the country and support a way for Dreamers and the broader undocumented population to become U.S. citizens. Meanwhile, Trump’s immigration approval continues to plummet, including among Hispanic voters. The Gallup findings echo many of the key takeaways and details from the recently released America’s Voice polling memo highlighting five key points about American public opinion on immigration.
According to Vanessa Cárdenas, Executive Director of America’s Voice,
“Buyer’s remorse is real when it comes to the Trump/Miller mass deportation agenda. The more Americans witness the human and economic harms in action, the more they reject it. Just like it did during the first Trump term, when public sentiment shifted in a decidedly pro-immigrant direction, we’re again seeing the backlash against the Trump/Miller assault on hardworking immigrants.
The abuse of power, manic chaos and intentional cruelty is not what Americans want. Incidents like the assault and detention of a disabled veteran and the tragic death of a farmworker in California last weekend during an ICE raid threaten to become more common now that Congressional Republicans have awarded Trump and Miller $170 billion in taxpayer funds to turbocharge their plans. The backlash by the American public should send a clear and powerful signal to elected leaders that Americans demand a very different vision on immigration: a balanced approach that includes an orderly border, legal immigration channels and a process for Dreamers and long-settled immigrants to become U.S. citizens – not targets for detention or deportation.”
Among the key findings in the 2025 Gallup poll:
- By a record high 79-17% margin, Americans think immigration is a “good thing” rather than a “bad thing” for the country. In the 24 different times Gallup has asked this question going back to 2001, the 79% who think immigration is a “good thing” is a record high and the 17% who said “bad thing” was a record low. Of note, the 79% “good thing” finding is a 15-percentage point jump from the 2024 version of the Gallup poll and includes a whopping shift among Republicans, who moved from 39% “good thing” in 2024 to 64% in the 2025 poll – a shift of 26 points.
- 78% of Americans support citizenship for undocumented immigrants, including majorities of all parties: 59% of Republican respondents, 79% of Independents and 93% of Democrats support, “Allowing immigrants living in the U.S. illegally the chance to become U.S. citizens if they meet certain requirements over a period of time.”
- An overwhelming 85% of Americans support Dreamers’ citizenship, including 71% of Republicans. Along with the Republican respondent breakdown, 85% of Independents, and 96% of Democrats supported “Allowing immigrants who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children the chance to become U.S. citizens if they meet certain requirements over a period of time.”
- 62-35% disapproval of Trump on immigration – with 2:1 disapproval among Americans who feel “strongly.” More Americans strongly disapprove of Trump on immigration – 45% – than approve of Trump on immigration overall (35% approve of Trump on immigration, including 21% who strongly approved).
- 9-in-10 Hispanic voters support a path to citizenship, while approximately 8-in-10 Hispanic voters disapprove of Trump on immigration. Among the Hispanic respondents in the Gallup survey, 91% support “Allowing immigrants living in the U.S. illegally the chance to become U.S. citizens if they meet certain requirements over a period of time.” Meanwhile, only 21% approve of Trump’s handling of immigration – meaning nearly 80% disapprove (the exact percentage of Hispanic respondents disapproving of Trump on immigration isn’t yet released by Gallup).
