Washington, DC — The following is a quote from Joanna Kuebler, Chief of Programs at America’s Voice, reacting to this weekend’s announcement from the Trump administration that it would send ICE agents to airports:
“A strong majority of Americans have recoiled against violent, out of control, poorly trained ICE agents being deployed to where they shouldn’t be and escalating tensions, chaos, and devastating harms in the process. Now, in the midst of a DHS shutdown centered on that very point, President Trump and Stephen Miller have decided the answer is to double down and repeat history. It appears the Trump administration wants ICE to do to America’s airports what it did to Minnesota. It’s dangerous, unnecessary and absurd, and a reminder to Americans what the government shutdown is all about.
Deploying ICE agents to airports instead of agreeing to the popular set of reforms on the table – or funding TSA and the rest of DHS while immigration enforcement negotiations continue – is another example of the Trump team’s fundamentally misplaced priorities. It’s also another self-inflicted blunder by an administration that seems more interested in stoking Democratic outrage than listening to the American people, solving problems, or governing in a serious fashion.”
