Vanessa Cárdenas: “Jeffries and Schumer kept Democrats from falling into the trap of throwing out forever 75 years of protections for refugees seeking asylum in exchange for 45 days of a Continuing Resolution to keep the U.S. government working for the American people”

Washington, DC – Today, Vanessa Cardenas singled out House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for praise after the weekend’s government shutdown drama.

The following is a statement from Vanessa Cárdenas, Executive Director of America’s Voice:

“Americans owe a big thank you to Democratic lawmakers who kept the government open, having provided the votes House Speaker McCarthy needed to avert a catastrophe of his own making. In particular, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the Minority Leader in the House, and Sen. Chuck Schumer, the Majority Leader in the Senate, kept Democrats from falling into the trap of throwing out forever 75 years of protections for refugees seeking asylum in exchange for 45 days of a Continuing Resolution. As their cruel and unworkable immigration and border demands show, Republicans are not interested in real border security or a functioning government. Meanwhile, Democrats are taking steps through TPS, parole, the refugee program and expanding access to work permits that show promising results in managing the U.S. response to the world refugee reality. The next 45 days will test Democrats and their leadership, but through this first round, they made smart decisions about what to support, what to oppose and when to compromise.”
