Washington, DC – New analysis from America’s Voice, “MAGA Extremism Failed at the Ballot Box,” examines 20 examples of gubernatorial, Senate, House, and other races where MAGA extremism and Republicans’ radicalization on immigration turned a winnable race for Republicans into an electoral defeat.
As the analysis explains, MAGA extremism – which included Republicans’ radicalization on immigration – turned an election with conditions that were overwhelmingly tilted in Republicans’ favor into an extremely close race for Congress. As a result, Republicans’ politics of fear, grievance and division spoke to their radicalized base, perhaps, but alienated the majority of the electorate.

“MAGA extremism, including its dangerous strain of nativism and white nationalism, was a major reason why Republicans underperformed in the 2022 midterms. In the 20 races cited in today’s analysis and in other examples across America, MAGA extremism was a costly liability instead of a political asset.
However, while MAGA extremism failed to deliver the majorities Republicans needed to decisively claim power in 2022, the threat of this extremism will remain until the GOP reckons with this problem. Because this is not a problem of the GOP’s fringes – it has become a problem at the Republican party’s core. The problem with white nationalism inside the Republican party and the accompanying threats to democracy are still ongoing. Maybe Republicans will heed the failures at the ballot box as a wake-up call. Maybe not. Regardless, organizing to protect the American promise of a multi-racial democracy must continue, starting today.”
