TIME FOR DESANTIS TO FACE SOME TOUGH QUESTIONS ON HIS LEGACY

Even before Florida’s anti-immigration law goes fully into effect on July 1, evidence mounts about the costs and consequences to the state. Gov. Ron DeSantis, who demanded the bill to bolster his extremist credentials and is going to the southern border next week, is not facing questions about the damage his policies are doing to Florida’s economy and communities. “When Ron DeSantis says he will do for America what he has done in Florida, is that a promise or a threat?” Read more from Executive Director Vanessa Cárdenas.

AS MASS SHOOTER CONVICTED, GOP REFUSES TO BACK DOWN FROM EXTREMISM

The white nationalist that targeted the Tree of Life synagogue in 2018 was convicted on 63 counts this week. Unfortunately, this mass shooting “has not been an isolated incident nor spurred a broader and sufficient reckoning with the ways white nationalist conspiracies have been mainstreamed and platformed by right-wing media and Republican elected officials,” AV Political Director Zachary Mueller said. Rather than being chastened, “the GOP has adopted these bigoted conspiracy theories as an organizing principle.” Read more from the Political Team.

THE FIGHT FOR EQUALITY NEVER ENDS

In their latest column, America’s Voice En Español Director Maribel Hastings and Spanish-language Advisor David Torres reflect on their visits to two Alabama museums dedicated to the history of slavery and racism in America. “The worst part about it is that in the present day, there are too many racist, segregationist, and anti-immigrant figures who desire to return to the past. Which denotes that the fight for equality in this country never ends.” Read their column in English here and in Spanish here.

SHIP TRAGEDY REMINDER OF RISKS CONTINUING TO FACE MIGRANTS

On World Refugee Day this past Tuesday, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees urged nations to do more to offer “hope, opportunities, and solutions” to people displaced from their homes as a horrific ship tragedy shows the ongoing risks migrants continue to face as they search for better lives. While authorities rescued more than 100 migrants from a boat that capsized off the Greek coast, hundreds more, including many children, are missing and are feared dead. Read more from Editor Gabe Ortíz.

AV TEAM KICKS OFF #MYIMMIGRATIONSTORY CAMPAIGN

In honor of the ongoing Immigrant Heritage Month, AV has launched a #MyImmigrationStory video series sharing our immigration stories and what immigration means to us. Political Associate and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipient Yuna Oh kicked off our campaign, saying in her TikTok video that her family came here from Korea “to have a chance to achieve the American Dream.” Watch more clips from our #My ImmigrationStory series and find out how you can participate here.

YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS THIS

Earlier this year, immigrant communities and allies in Minnesota scored a major victory when the state became the 19th in the nation to open driver’s licenses to its residents, regardless of immigration status. This not only helps keep families together, but helps make roads safer for all Minnesotans. Click here to watch UnidosMN Hennepin County Organizer Regina Olono discuss this 20-years-in-the-making win with Campaigns Director Mario Carrillo.
