WASHINGTON, D.C. — A new America’s Voice polling analysis offers six key takeaways about Americans’ current immigration public opinion ahead of the November midterms, with detailed evidence for each point based on a wide array of recent polling (available in full memo here).
According to Vanessa Cárdenas, Executive Director of America’s Voice: “Americans resoundingly reject the violence, chaos and lawlessness of Donald Trump and Stephen Miller’s assault on immigrants that impacts us all. They have built their political brand on their anti-immigrant mass deportation machine, and the American people have had a year and a half to watch it in action: masked agents terrorizing communities, families torn apart, people dying in custody and on the street. This terror hasn’t made us more safe. It hasn’t brought stability and prosperity. The stark fact is that the result of this unprecedented onslaught has instilled chaos and fear and helped wreck our economy. Poll after poll, in red states and blue, shows the country is rejecting this lawless and dangerous purge. Come November, we must hold this administration and their allies accountable.”
Based on an array of public polls from 2026, the new America’s Voice memo makes the following six key points:
- Trump’s approval on immigration, once his strongest issue, keeps sinking as the midterms approach. Four separate major public polls released in July and August 2026 show majorities disapprove of Trump’s handling of immigration. A Fox News poll found voters now trust Democrats over Republicans on the issue for the first time this term.
- ICE has collapsed into one of the least trusted agencies in the federal government. Recent surveys from Economist/YouGov, AP-NORC, PRRI, and Navigator Research all find majorities of Americans expressing little to no confidence in ICE, with favorability numbers falling across every partisan group—including Republicans.
- Mass deportation is hitting Americans’ wallets, and voters are taking notice. Building on America’s Voice’s “End the ICE Tax” analysis, new polling from Morris Predictive Insights/Verasight, CNBC, and FWD.us finds majorities blaming mass deportation for rising grocery, gas, and childcare costs. A new America’s Voice/Grow Progress survey shows voters shift toward candidates who scale back enforcement to lower costs once they see the data.
- Solid majorities say mass deportation is making the country less safe. PRRI, PBS/NPR/Marist, and Quinnipiac each find Americans saying by double-digit margins that the ICE surge is making communities less safe, not more.
- Legal status for long-established immigrants decisively beats mass deportation. Gallup, Economist/YouGov, and the bipartisan Program for Public Consultation “Common Ground in the Battlegrounds” survey all find durable majorities—including in the most competitive midterm districts—favoring a path to legal status over mass removal.
- Latino voters, a decisive bloc in midterm battlegrounds, have swung hard away from Trump and the GOP over immigration. New surveys from UnidosUS/BSP Research, Third Way, and Hart Research/TelevisaUnivision all find roughly two-thirds of Latino voters disapproving of Trump’s handling of the presidency and immigration enforcement specifically, with Latino voters favoring Democrats on the generic ballot by wide margins.
