Washington, DC – Days after Americans delivered a decisive rebuke of Donald Trump’s mass deportation agenda, Trump announced Friday that Stephen Miller will replace Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff starting Monday. According to The New York Times, Trump blamed Wiles for the midterm losses and promoted the man the Times calls “the architect of Trump’s mass deportation effort.”
Vanessa Cárdenas, Executive Director of America’s Voice, issued the following statement:
“Following historic losses this week, Donald Trump’s decision to name Stephen Miller his chief of staff tells us everything we need to know about how this administration will conduct itself moving forward. Make no mistake: On Tuesday, the American people rejected the Trump-Miller mass deportation machine and said enough. Instead of listening, Trump blamed his staff and handed a promotion to the architect of chaos, cruelty, and callousness. Stephen Miller is responsible for the masked agents in our neighborhoods, the U.S. citizens beaten and detained, the families torn apart, and the lives lost from Minneapolis to Biddeford. Elevating him is an act of open disdain toward a nation that just rebuked this agenda. But the American people have already spoken. We will keep working to defeat the forces behind this machine, and the new Congress must use every tool it has to rein in ICE and hold this administration accountable.”
Miller has worked for Trump since his first campaign and, according to the Times, has been “the driving force behind Trump’s hardline immigration policy.” Americans have firmly turned against that approach. The 2026 Midterm Election Voter Poll, a BSP Research survey of more than 10,000 voters, found that 67% of white voters, 82% of Latino voters, and 89% of Black voters believe ICE’s actions over the last two years have either crossed the line or need to be stopped.
