While the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office investigates whether a Mexican drug cartel has placed a $1 million price on Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s head, Phoenix’s Hispanic community continues to live in fear day in and day out, while in Staten Island police are making arrests in the area’s most recent hate crime.

Arpaio’s fear…News agency EFE reports that the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating allegations that a Mexican drug cartel has placed a $1 million bounty on the head of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The office claims that the FBI is assisting with the investigation.

…is nothing new to Phoenix’s Hispanics. AOL Latino, Ponte Al Día, and LatinoCalifornia.com, among other outlets, publish the column “SB 1070, Arpaio and good-luck charms” by Maribel Hastings of America’s Voice. The column points out that fear continues to permeate the Hispanic community in Phoenix, Arizona, even after Judge Susan Bolton’s partial injunction against SB 1070. The fact of the matter, the column explains, is that Sheriff Arpaio continues to conduct 287(g) operations and engage in racial profiling. For many immigrants, the situation remains the same.
